Meanwhile, initial claims or the number of people filing for unemployment benefits,has been steadily retreating, which continues to signal strength in employment.

During earnings season, equities become quite volatile, and signals can reverse rather quickly after an earnings release.  We find it important to try to avoid ALERTS! for company’s that are reporting within approximately two weeks to avoid this volatility.  However, now that earnings season is on the tail end, many charts are beginning to show signs of potential breaks that may provide good opportunities.  Speaking of earnings season, a little over 80% of the companies in the S&P 500 excluding financials have reported as of today and the results are a mixed, but still slanted to the positive.

In the 1st quarter of 2013, companies have struggled to beat out analysts estimates for sales / revenue growth, but have handily beat on earnings.  Energy, industrials and materials have been the lagging sectors with the greatest percentage of misses while consumer discretionary exhibits overall relative strength.

The economic reports out of the U.S. helped to provide a bid to markets as the employment numbers gained momentum. Moreover, the housing sector continued to recover and combined with the employment picture provided evidence that the Fed’s master plan is starting to prove beneficial. With yields low and Bernanke’s commitment to maintaining highly accommodative monetary policies, sentiment has risen.

Europe continues to be a specific worry though as the financial crisis has claimed Cyprus as another victim of the grand Euro experiment. The news that bank depositors would lose money in order for the country to receive bailout funds was not well received. This may set a new precedent that reverses the ECB’s previous policy of unlimited bailouts with limited restrictions.

The big question for the coming quarters will be the impact of the rising U.S. dollar on earnings and margins. Already many companies have pre-announced that they are lowering guidance for the next quarter. With earnings season getting underway, the make or break time is coming for markets that may have become somewhat pricey. Even so, the mantra that has been embraced by Wall Street continues to be: Out of all the asset classes, stocks are the only real option at this time.

Will the old tale of “Sell in May and go away” prevail this year?  Statistics are fairly inconclusive on this matter when looking over the past 20 years of S&P returns.  However, it is worth noting that when January – April have returns greater than 5%, the likelihood of a negative return is 20% greater with an average return for the period of -1.01%.

While we don’t necessarily subscribe to this theory, it is worth considering, especially when the S&P has run over 10% in the first quarter of 2013.  In 2010, as well as 2011, the S&P 500 during the period of May through August returned -10.94% and -9.97% respectively.  2012 was also fairly dismal with increased volatility and a return of a mere 1.45%.  With that said, economists and analysts still proclaim that stocks (especially U.S. based) are cheap and the best value around.
